How To Decide On The Right Font For Your Brand

Choosing a font can impact how others see your brand. Some fonts are polished and formal, others are fun and flowy. Make sure you choose a font that suits your brand perfectly. There are many different types of fonts that you may want to consider.

The first thing to consider when choosing a font is whether to pick one that is serif or sans serif. Serif fonts have “feet” or “tails.” These are small lines at the tops and bottoms of letters.

According to Canva, Times New Roman, Courier New and Georgia are some of the most commonly used serif fonts. Ariel, Helvetica and Calibri are the most commonly used sans serif fonts.

Types Of Fonts

Serif fonts are great for a more traditional company. These fonts are popular with books and newspapers. They have a more old-timey look and can symbolize trustworthiness. According to Canva, these fonts can be a good choice for law and financial firms as well as insurance companies.

Sans serif fonts, on the other hand, are more modern and sleek. They are minimalistic and can be better for brands trying to appeal to a younger audience. Sans serif fonts are a good choice for tech companies, startups or companies with creative branding.

In recent years, many brands are switching from serif to sans serif fonts. This is to help companies look more modern, as many of the top brands aim for a sleeker, minimalistic look. Serif fonts are also more accessible because they are easier to read. For example, the Google logo in 2015, switched from a serif to sans serif font.

Some other options to consider include slab fonts, which are serifs with thicker, larger lines. These logos are bold, easy to read and show a confident, dependable brand, according to Visme.

Script fonts are written in cursive. They look fancy and are often made of thin, flowing lines. They can be great for a brand that wants to appear elegant and feminine. These fonts, however, are less professional and can be difficult to read. So, consider legibility when choosing a font. Companies with Script fonts include Coca-Cola, Ford and Kellogg’s.

Decorative fonts use unique designs and sometimes consist of different shapes or have unique flair. This font does not fit into any of the other categories. Examples of companies with this type of font include Fanta, Disney and Lego. Use this type of logo if you want to evoke emotional connection with your audience or want to show off your brand’s originality.

Finally, handwritten fonts, as the name suggests, look like someone use a pen or pencil to write the text. These logos may not be the most sleek, but give a feeling of authenticity, playfulness and friendliness. They are a great option if you want to appeal to children or families. Examples of brands with handwritten fonts include Sharpie, Barbie and Harrods.

Many brands, however, can be more than one type. For example the Mcdonald’s logo can be considered both decorative and sans serif.

Choosing colors can also be important when considering how you want to present your font. Check out our previous blog posts to learn more about how colors can impact your brand!
